Why Rihanna, Miley, and Kylie Love This Vintage Arizona Store

Unbeknownst to many, a boutique in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale caters to the stars with a curated selection of Chanel, Hermes and other luxury clothing and accessories.

Vintage by Misty’s reputation for attracting famous clientele has been somewhat under the radar in the Valley since it opened in 2009. You won’t see the storefront in the background of paparazzi photos, for once.

Some recognizable names – including Martha Stewart and Alice Cooper and his wife, Sheryl Goddard – walked into the luxury resale store.

What brings them to the Scottsdale boutique is owner Misty Guerriero, who has a knack for finding vintage pieces from luxury brands in good condition. Guerriero has made a name for herself in the fashion world over the past decade: Earlier this year, she was cited in British Vogue as the go-to vintage source for Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Kylie Jenner.

Sometimes the items she finds and sells end up in a world-famous singer’s Instagram post that garners over 7 million likes – or in a music video that has been viewed over 152 million times.

Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Kylie Jenner stylists buy Vintage by Misty

Rihanna can sometimes be seen wearing items from Guerriero’s boutique, including being photographed with boyfriend ASAP Rocky and modeling her lingerie brand, Savage X Fenty.

“Rihanna… has been shopping with me a lot through COVID. And she not only buys but also wears (the products),” Guerriero said. “Most of the time they buy but don’t wear.”

Often, it’s not the prominent celebrities themselves, but their stylists who turn to Vintage by Misty for vintage designer items such as jewelry, handbags, shoes, and clothing. They help dress their clients for occasions which can range from casual outings to live shows and red carpet events.

More than once this year, Rihanna has been photographed wearing Chanel Y2K sunglasses with iridescent Vintage by Misty lenses. The singer and entrepreneur has also donned several coats from the Guerriero boutique. Some Fendi bags found by Guerriero are part of Rihanna’s vintage bag collection, to which Vogue UK has dedicated an entire article.

Rihanna also posed in Savage X Fenty on her Instagram, accessorizing the lingerie with a vintage David Yurman Omega 18k gold necklace from Vintage by Misty.

Miley Cyrus’ stylist has also been “a big client” with Vintage by Misty for several years, Guerriero said. The store owner is in constant contact with celebrity stylists – including those who work with Kylie Jenner – posting videos of new products and measuring their interest.

Earlier this year, Cyrus posed with Billy Idol ahead of their pre-Super Bowl performance wearing John Galliano boots for Dior – which date from the late ’90s or early 2000s – which Guerriero herself had found. Last year, Cyrus wore a pair of Gucci shoes from Vintage by Misty in his “Midnight Sky” music video.

“The gods of vintage are on my side” at Vintage by Misty

Before opening Vintage by Misty, Guerriero – a self-described bohemian girl – traveled the world collecting vintage furniture for sale at her first store, which opened in 2005, according to her website. However, she became in high demand for her fashion finds during these trips, which prompted her to open a clothing and accessories store.

“I never really thought about it, to be honest,” she said of opening her own store.

She started her business in downtown Phoenix in 2009 and moved to Scottsdale in 2013 to attract more pedestrians. Then, in 2020, Guerriero had “my best year ever,” despite closing its storefront from March to June.

Turns out it was a good time to be a consignment store while people stayed at home, as many of them decided to downsize their closets. When shopping, they looked for quality over quantity, Guerriero said.

Since starting his business, Guerriero has found that as trends come back into fashion, people seek to own original pieces from those eras. She says that while the 90s are now, the 70s are also “back”.

“This is where vintage comes in,” Guerriero said. “I always have very good quality (products).”

Guerriero is so good at finding vintage luxury pieces that some fashion houses also end up buying Vintage by Misty, repurchasing their designs to keep them in their archives.

As to the provenance of these items, people are contacting her from all corners of the Internet to see if Vintage by Misty would be interested in taking their items.

In one case, Guerriero spent three months interviewing a local client before agreeing to entrust him with his collection of Versace items for men. As she explains, the vast collection “came to me by fate”.

Otherwise, she would shop “all over the place” and travel abroad to find luxury pieces to resell.

“The vintage gods are on my side,” she explained. “It’s just coming for me.”
