Retroville offers vintage shoes and clothing in Gastonia’s Eastridge shopping center
A small business has found a new life in Gastonie.
Retroville, an upscale vintage and retro shoe store, opened this month inside the Eastridge Shopping Center in Gastonia.
Founded by Kendall Brooks, Retroville started out as a way to sell vintage shoes online. In January, Brooks opened a physical location in the back room of a Shelby barber shop in hopes of bringing something new and unique to the city.
This store closed this spring after someone broke in and stole over $ 1,300 in shoes and other items.
“The move could have been a long-term decision going forward, but with the burglary, we decided we wanted to do something to put our safety in order,” Brooks said. “After what happened, we decided we needed to find a safer space.”
Brooks said he explored a few places, including the Cleveland Mall, before settling on the Eastridge Mall. Since opening in early June, he said the business has almost picked up where it left off before closing.
“We’re getting a lot more traffic from Charlotte now,” he said. “Before we might have had a few people, but Shelby was a bit too far away for some. Now that we’re closer we see more people from there.”
In addition to better security, the mall also gives Retroville more space, as the mall’s location is almost three times the size of its original store. The extra space allows the company to display more shoes, as well as a wide selection of retro clothing.
Retroville is across from Bath and Body Works on the ground floor of the mall. It is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
