Ralph Lauren Introduces “Intelligent Insulation” Technology, a Pioneering Apparel Innovation Developed for Team USA’s Opening Ceremony Parade Uniform

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ralph Lauren (NYSE: RL) today unveiled a groundbreaking apparel and textile innovation with Smart insulation – a first-to-market, sustainable-minded temperature-sensitive fabric that adapts to cooler temperatures by expanding and creating a layer of insulation – which will be used to outfit Team USA for the opening ceremonies of the Winter Games.

Designed with a sustainable ethic, Smart insulation expands the lifespan and use of a garment that would otherwise only be appropriate for a short seasonal period. For the first time, a single garment can span three seasons and transition from an indoor to an outdoor environment seamlessly, eliminating the need for multiple garments.

“The development and introduction of Smart insulation reinvents what is possible in the apparel landscape. For the first time, you can have a singular item that offers incredible versatility and style, for a variety of temperatures, changing the way we can think holistically about the makeup of a consumer’s wardrobe. As a long-time partner of Team USA, Ralph Lauren is proud to continually provide innovative and useful apparel to the world’s top athletes,” said David Lauren, Chief Brand and Innovation Officer, Ralph Lauren.

Building on the company’s ongoing commitment to invest in, develop and advance breakthrough apparel innovations, Ralph Lauren has partnered with textile innovation company Skyscrape to bring the technology to market for the Team USA Opening Ceremony Parade Uniform.

the Smart insulation The technology adapts to changes in air temperature around the wearer without using battery-powered or “hard-wired” technology. The fabric itself is made up of two separate materials that expand or contract at different rates in response to temperature changes. As temperatures drop, the lengths of the two materials change differently, causing the textile to contract and flex, creating channels in the fabric structure to increase the amount of insulation provided by the garment. The advanced technology developed by Skyscrape required years of research and development, including the creation of bespoke machines and a proprietary production process initially supported by the United States Department of Energy’s ARPA-E.

The look of the Team USA Opening Ceremony Parade Uniform is a fresh, modern take on sportswear and was created with sustainability in mind. The look includes an anorak, with Smart insulation technology, midlayer, pants, gloves and boot, all featuring recycled polyester fiber made from post-consumer plastic bottles. Every item in the uniform is proudly made in the USA.

“Ralph Lauren has defined American style for more than five decades, and we’re thrilled that Team USA will once again be wearing these cutting-edge, durable and iconic apparel at the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Sarah Hirshland, General Manager, States -United. Olympic and Paralympic Committee. “America’s elite athletes have worked their entire lives for the opportunity to represent the United States on the world stage. We thank Ralph Lauren for celebrating and supporting them, and for pushing the envelope when developing apparel that serves a purpose for Team USA.

Additionally, Ralph Lauren will launch a series of virtual reality content featuring six Team USA athletes. Customers will be able to explore the technology through a headset or through an immersive in-store installation at select Ralph Lauren stores.

Ralph Lauren has been proud to be an official equipment supplier to Team USA since 2008. Unlike the Olympic and Paralympic teams in most other countries, American athletes are not supported by federal funding. A portion of Ralph Lauren Team USA Collection sales support the United States Olympic and Paralympic teams.
