Rachel Comey Fall 2022 Ready-to-Wear Collection
There comes a time in August when the truth becomes inevitable. Summer is winding down, the leaves of Central Park are “not exactly withered but withered,” as Joan Didion wrote, and September with its return-to-real-life timeline descends upon us. August is the cruellest month, the time of endings, except for this hopeful thing: the arrival in stores of designers’ fall collections.
Rachel Comey’s new range won’t just tame the specter of approaching cold; with its many layers and meshes of all shapes and sizes, it might have you looking forward to the change of seasons. Look 1 sets the agenda: the model wears a dark purple corduroy shirt over an acid wash denim jacket over a button down hammered silk shirt.
A tailored midriff-cut bra top and vest (2022’s erogenous zone) make appearances, but they’re sidenotes. Comey’s stories this season are acid-wash denim in interesting silhouettes like tunics and pleated-front baggy jeans, oversized tailoring – truly oversized in the case of a red silk-lined top coat – and knitwear. Front seam cropped pants in a playful floral intarsia have a lot of personality. Ditto a floral print jersey turtleneck and a pleated midi skirt worn with matching floral print boots.
That’s the key to Comey’s appeal, she makes real clothes that leave room for surprise. September around the corner might not be so bad.
