Jewelry designer, Rosa De La Cruz

Created in 2010, Rosa of the Cross jewelry is synonymous with beauty, quality and, above all, joy.

Co-founded by Rosa de la Cruz and former fashion director Tierney Horne, the London-based label draws inspiration from multiple sources, from vintage jewelry to artwork – after all, Rosa is the daughter of art collectors, and the founder of the Cruz Collection museum of contemporary art in Miami’s Design District.

The result? Instantly recognizable jewelry that sits between classic and contemporary, fun and future heirlooms. And they also have universal and intergenerational appeal, with carriers such as Kate Moss and Katy Perry all the way to Leonardo DiCaprio, to name a few.

Rosa talks about style, she Brand, and produce jewelry that evokes happiness.

Felicity Carter: What’s your first memory of style?

Rosa De La Cruz: My partner Tierney and I love and collect vintage jewelry. I have always been inspired by the 1950s jewelry of my Cuban grandmothers. At my parents’ museum in Miami, the Collection de la Cruz, you can see a Salvador Dali portrait of my grandmother Lolo wearing an equally surreal pair of Van Cleef pearl and diamond earrings that are now mine .

FC: How did you get into the jewelry industry?

RDLC: I studied business at Wharton and law at Columbia University, then worked in the legal department at the Guggenheim and the law firm Skadden Arps. While Tierney was the fashion director at Harpers and Elle and worked in the fashion industry. Despite my professional background, I have always been interested in art and design and involved in creative projects such as interiors, illustration and fashion. After discovering a jewelry workshop in Milan to produce pieces myself, I decided to launch myself as a company that had many requests and incredible press support. Then, twelve years ago, Tierney and I got together. We both had complementary backgrounds and working and creating together is fun and dynamic, like our jewelry!

FC: How would you sum up the aesthetic of Rosa De La Cruz?

RDLC: When designing jewelry, I am inspired by the same visual and tactile appeal that I find in my appreciation of all elements of my daily life, including art, design, and fashion. I am a collector at heart, but I adhere to the maxim “less is more”: limit your environment to goods that give you joy and beauty. My personal style and home all reflect the same linearity, minimalism, and playfulness that you find in our jewelry line. The simplicity and integrity of the design in turn underscores the beauty and quality of the materials and craftsmanship.

FC: Who is your client?

RDLC: Like our customers, we have found that our jewelry defies age and gender. This is really the special spirit of the wearer who defines it. We are fortunate to have a fabulous diverse group wearing our collection including Kate Moss, Adwoa Aboah, Kristen McMenamy, Lily Allen, Leonardo DiCaprio …

FC: Tell us about the collection and your signature pieces?

RDLC: One of our bestselling pieces is a beautiful, classic long chain in 18k gold. The idea is for you to collect and layer different pendants, be it your own family or childhood jewelry or new pendants, which we are still designing. The Smile face inspired us for a pendant because of its visual simplicity in the design – it’s a game of circles – but it’s playful and evocative and inspires emotion and conversation. It’s a memory mori live every day. Be happy.

FC: Tell us about the process?

RDLC: Our jewelry collection has never been market or season driven – it’s based on timeless pieces and featuring gorgeous craftsmanship and materials – pieces we want to wear now, but also collect and overlay.

FC: What is luxury for you?

RDLC: Luxury is living with taste and style. Big style is about editing and everything in the details. Accessories allow you to customize, update and ultimately complete a look. As an accessory, fine jewelry offers you inherently precious and timeless pieces that you treasure, collect and continue to appreciate beyond this season.

FC: Where can we buy?

RDLC: Matchesfashion, Moda Operandi, The Webster, Farfetch…
