Influencers share fashion tips for recent college graduates
Navigating a young adult wardrobe can be tricky — you’re ready to ditch the party dress and embrace a more mature style, but you still want to look like you’re in your twenties.
According to style influencer Sydney Andrews, 24, it’s possible to strike a balance between the two to ease the transition into the world of work.
“It’s weird [phase of] coming out of college where you maybe wear sweatpants every day and then your going out clothes, to build this capsule wardrobe of things you can wear to work,” Andrews told Shop TODAY. “Then also figure out how you can dress it up and maybe wear it to go to a happy hour, but also without looking too mature.”
According to the influencers we spoke to for style advice, it’s possible to create a wardrobe suitable for young adults by pairing cheaper basics with good quality pieces that are as versatile as your lifestyle. Where you could go all out for a nice blazer, you can save by buying cheaper basic t-shirts and tank tops.
Andrews’ must-have splurges are a nice pair of trainers – she’s loving New Balance right now, she says – black boots, a good pair of jeans or slacks, a blazer and a pair of leather pants.
For 25-year-old influencer Maddison Collinge, navigating a post-graduation wardrobe meant stocking up on pieces that could translate from her workwear to her personal lifestyle. Jumpsuits and a good pair of pants are one way to do this, she said.
“Getting these basics and staple pieces really helped me with all my different styles,” Collinge said.
Collinge shared her influencer fashion tips, recommending looking for national fast fashion retailers that are more affordable and have a wide variety of options.
“They may have a lot of younger clothes, but I honestly think it’s all about what you’re looking for,” Andrews said of more affordable stores. “And you can find some great pieces in those stores if you just spend a little more time.”
Still, Andrews said not everyone might want to spend hours scrolling through a store’s vast online site or through shelves to find the perfect top. For people who want a quick clothing fix, she recommended visiting the smaller boutiques.
Accessories also go a long way to elevating an outfit, Andrews said.
“You can wear a black t-shirt and jeans, but if you put on a cute little bag and big gold necklaces and hoops and slick your hair back, you’ll look 10 times more put together in my opinion “, said Andrews. .
As you develop your style identity in your 20s, both influencers recommended sticking to what you look and feel comfortable in. Buying an outfit based on the latest trend can give instant gratification, but if you don’t feel confident, you might not wear it or regret the purchase altogether.
Figuring out which pieces and styles suit your body type is one way to stick to buying clothes that help you feel confident, Collinge said. Even splurging selectively on clothes that are good quality, durable, and fit you well can add a lot to a wardrobe.
“That’s one thing I’m also really focusing on now is getting a good pair of jeans, maybe they’re a bit more expensive but they’re actually flattering me and I feel like I’m in it. comfortable and confident and you’ll actually wear them,” Andrews said. . “So I think it’s worth spending the money on it.”
