High School Sports Review: Chancellor Dominates James Monroe Dramatically For Battlefield Tournament Title | High school
Field hockey teams Chancellor and James Monroe left it all on the pitch in another classic clash between the top two teams in the Battlefield District.
This one took a little longer to find a winner. Two overtime periods and 11 rounds of 1-on-1 tiebreakers to be exact before the Chargers (16-1) take the upper hand to claim the district tournament title.
After the first two rounds of five shooters, the tiebreaker changes to a sudden win format. Goalkeeper Chancellor Regan Bestick opened the 11th round with a save, then twin sister Kaitlyn put her chance to win aside.
Regan Bestick, who finished with nine saves in regulation and overtime, put in the winning moment after saving seven consecutive 1-to-1 tie-breaking attempts by the Yellow Jackets (15-3).
After the scoreless game at half-time, Celie Constantine scored in the third quarter to give JM a 1-0 lead.
Chancellor’s Ella Newman tied at 1-1 midway through the fourth quarter, fending off a Lindsey Loar assist.
The tiebreaker first round ended 3-3, and it stayed that way throughout the second five-shooter series, setting the Bestick sisters up for their winning moments.
In Thursday’s semifinals, Chancellor sent Eastern View 3-0. Loar, Ellie Byram and Caitlyn Bergmann each scored assists for Byram, Ashley Coleman and Kaitlyn Bestick.
