Higg Partners with Apparel Impact Institute, Offering Custom Carbon Reduction Strategies for Apparel Brands and Manufacturers
SAN FRANCISCO, February 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Higgthe sustainability information platform for the consumer goods industry, has partnered with Apparel Impact Institute (Aii) to launch a new measurable carbon management program for manufacturing facilities. the Carbon Leadership Programled by Aii’s strategic partner RESET Carbon, has developed a new carbon assessment as part of a collective effort to reduce global supply chain carbon emissions. Higg will serve as the technology partner hosting the assessment.
After manufacturers complete the assessment, they receive a potential carbon reduction score, which helps brands prioritize manufacturing partners with the greatest potential for improvement. In an optional second stage, with the support of a dedicated engineer, nominated manufacturers will receive customized strategies, training and tools to help them set and meet their carbon targets. Thereafter, on a monthly basis, manufacturers share assessment data through the Higg platform to help engineers and brands understand progress and identify future areas for improvement.
“The industry has long lacked a standard, pragmatic approach for manufacturing facilities to determine and achieve their carbon reduction potential,” said Kurt Kipka, vice-president of Aii. “When RESET Carbon offered an in-depth facility questionnaire to create curated action plans with engineering support, we knew it was the perfect solution. Now our Brand Partners can name with confidence and , in some cases, sponsor manufacturing suppliers to help them set or confirm achievable reduction targets.”
“American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) is a long-time supporter of Higg, Aii and RESET Carbon. We see these organizations working together as an important step for the retail industry and, more importantly, for climate change. Carbon Tech Assessment provides AEO with the opportunity to further develop meaningful and impactful relationships with our partners while prioritizing the vendors we connect with,” said michelle tarrySenior Director, Responsible Sourcing and Sustainable Development at AEO. “This allows AEO to move the conversation beyond introductory topics such as energy efficiency to specific solutions, such as coal phase-out and renewable energy. With this data now available on the Higg platform , AEO will be able to reach suppliers faster and implement solutions more efficiently.”
Since the “Scope 3” area of global supply chains creates the most emissions, it is critical that apparel brands and their suppliers share data to collaborate on carbon reduction plans. As brands strive to measure their total impact, they will be ready to define scientific objectiveswhich are gaining importance in the fight against climate change.
“At C&A, we understand the enormous risks climate change poses to our industry and the communities we source from. Having had the privilege of piloting the Carbon Tech assessment, we are excited about the integration of Aii and Higg We look forward to using The Higg Platform to collect environmental data more effectively, helping us to support our suppliers by setting science-backed climate goals and action plans, as well as jointly developing practical knowledge on implementation,” said Eunice CheungSenior Project Officer – Environmental Supply Chain Management at CALIFORNIA.
“We are committed to providing businesses with actionable data and insights into their carbon impact so they can assess emissions and make strategic decisions and changes to improve performance,” said Jason Kibby, CEO, Higg. “Offering this carbon assessment on the Higg platform allows brands to access even more data in one place, providing a complete view of their environmental impact.”
