Azerbaijan Fashion Week ends in Baku

The new season of Azerbaijan Fashion Week wrapped up on Sunday, concluding three days of glamor and style in Baku.

Now in its twelfth edition, the fashion extravaganza has brought together fashion lovers from across the region, as well as local and foreign designers at the Hilton Baku hotel.

The event, which was held from May 20 to 22, presented fascinating collections of the latest fashion trends for the spring and summer 2022 seasons. This season featured designs from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, from Turkey and Uzbekistan.

The annual large-scale fashion event was held under the motto “We are together” to show the unity of the people of Turkey in the face of current challenges in the world.

In an interview with Caspian News, Sayad Dossybayev, Artistic Director of Azerbaijan Fashion Week, explained the background behind this season’s tagline.

“Each time we want to find some kind of philosophy for the show, give it some meaning,” Dossybayev said. “The previous fashion season in Baku was held under the slogan ‘Return’ to celebrate Azerbaijan’s historic victory in the Second Karabakh (Garabagh) War, which saw the liberation of Azerbaijani lands after almost three decades of Armenian occupation.

“We have given back what is ours. Thanks to that, there was a feeling that we were together. Together we have survived the pandemic, together we are experiencing the actions that are unfolding now. We want to say that we are together for peace,” Dossybayev said.

The theme of friendship between the Turkish peoples and respect for the national traditions of different countries was reflected in the colors of the main visual of this season.

“This season features designer collections from sister countries Turkey,” Dossybayev said. “Together, we are also part of the Great Silk Road. For the design of the visual material, including posters, invitations and gifts, the artists and graphic designers used all the colors of the flags of the participating countries. Therefore, this year’s slogan is very large.

On an opening day, elegant evening dresses, wedding dresses, suits, skirts and corsets were presented by eight fashion houses and workshops from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkey. Ulkar Hasanova, the Azerbaijani designer, opened this season’s fashion week with her fashion collection which included beautiful feminine looks.

The three-day event featured fashion collections designed by national designers Ny Gyul, Mujgen Bashirova and Gunay Ibrahimli, brand “Miduamo”, “Eva Boutique”, “Adili”, “Mimiya”, “Zu Sorelle Atelier” , “Volskaya”, ” Aisha”, “Inju”, “Azizli Kids Collection”, “Princess Amira” and many others.

Looking to the future of the fashion industry in Azerbaijan, the show’s artistic director spoke to Caspian News about the results achieved during the twelve seasons of Azerbaijan Fashion Week.

“When we started the first season, some people were skeptical, but Fashion Week is definitely serious business,” Dossybayev said. “It’s the economy and the industry. After all, we are walking down the street fully clothed. Someone is wearing locally made clothes, someone is wearing an expensive brand. And I see that the Azerbaijani public dresses amazingly. We create holidays where you can come and show yourself in all its glory.

Azerbaijan Fashion Week is supported by the Ministry of Culture, which works to promote the Azerbaijani fashion industry and create favorable conditions for its designers. Dossybayev expects increased government support for the event to help propel the industry domestically and help designers establish a presence abroad.
