All the looks from the 1017 ALYX 9SM Fall/Winter 2022 collection

An intricate marble floor, historic Renaissance-style frescoes and an ancient wooden altar form the immersive backdrop of the 1017 ALYX 9SM Fall/Winter 2022 “FADE” collection, which took place in an enchanting historic church in Milan on January 14 at 8 p.m. CET. Creative director Matthew M. Williams launched 1017 ALYX 9SM in 2015 in New York and has since created a brand that deftly distinguishes between streetwear and luxury apparel. Drawing inspiration from California and New York youth subcultures and using innovative design processes and materials, Williams aims to “unite technical innovation with human emotion” through the brand.

Against the background of lively techno music that Williams teased in an Instagram post on January 13, the Fall/Winter 2022 show did not disappoint. The first impactful look features an oversized brown jacket with an exaggerated shoulder paired with matching wide leg cargo pants displaying 3D slashed outer pockets. At the model’s feet are sculptural unique polymer injection boots inspired by Fall 22 Mono slip-ons that williams unveiled on Instagram earlier this week. This ultralight architectural boot makes numerous appearances in the collection, highlighting its wearable versatility.

The Fall/Winter 2022 Collection harmoniously blends streetwear and luxury. The collection is wearable, with most looks being oversized. The corset-style tops featured throughout the collection, for example, do not hug the body, but rather hang casually against the model’s sleek silhouettes. At the same time, these clothes don’t feel baggy or ill-fitting, just comfortable and cool. Puffer jackets and gilets in heavy jersey, textured wool jackets and sexy yet wearable dresses containing raw seams and leather straps are featured throughout the collection. Finally, it’s worth noting that all the models wear intimidating dark sunglasses as they walk down the marble runway, some carrying large, simple leather bags, the long strap twisted between their fingers. These comfortable and chic pieces are all ideal for our contemporary 2022 lifestyle.

Shiny PVC leather, cozy chic shearling (sometimes reversible) and textured knit are some of the natural and technical materials Williams uses throughout the line. The organic color palette is cohesive, with black being the most dominant color, followed by muted shades of green. A bold red and hot pink punctuate the soft colors, keeping viewers on their toes.

Overall, the collection of 42 looks builds perfectly on William’s previous line, expanding on pre-existing ideas and planting new ones. The clothes are elevated and innovative while remaining accessible and wearable. Although a relatively young brand, 1017 ALYX 9SM seems to have found its place in the fashion industry, and this collection looks like the epitome of cool. The future is bright for Matthew M. Williams.
